Words From the Photographer

Welcome to my exhibition: Black Expressions: A Life In New York City.

I am delighted and privileged to present this extraordinary collection alongside a remarkable ensemble of artists here at CAfED, as we proudly unveil "More than a Moment."

The inception of “Black Expressions” stems from my unwavering passion to capture the essence of my community. We transcend the negative depictions often portrayed in mainstream media, and it is of utmost significance to me to immortalize moments that embody our complete humanity. Here on this level, I endeavor to illuminate the resilience and triumph that arise amidst the struggles and pressures faced by black individuals in a city like New York, within the tapestry of America. Venturing down to the lower level, I shift the narrative to embrace the celebratory joys that radiate from our hearts.

If I were to capture a photograph every minute and every second of the day within our exquisite African American community, it would merely skim the surface of our collective visual story. We are more than a moment; indeed, we are an embodiment of depth and richness that extends beyond what meets the eye.

Join us as we delve into the realm of Black Expressions, where the power of visual storytelling illuminates the spirit of our community.

Black Lives Matter, 2020

After a night of mostly peaceful protesting in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, remains of chard-blackened glass from a burnt police cruiser sat outside of Fort Greene Park. When the cruiser was removed a person gathered the glass fragments and created this beautiful tribute to Black Lives Matter. Other passer-buyers began placing flowers on the ground. I thought the tranquil scene should be captured.

Frustration, 2021

On a tranquil evening in late summer, I invited my dear friend to join me for a session of capturing moments through the lens of my camera. As an avid enthusiast, I find great pleasure in exploring various styles of photography. Guiding him through a series of emotive expressions, I eloquently uttered keywords that evoked profound depth. In America, the journey of a black man is far from simple. Countless of us have experienced the weight of raw frustration, coursing through our veins, and shaping our existence.

Hands Raised for Equality and Justice, 2020

Ten days after the tragic killing of George Floyd, a rallying cry echoed through Cadman Plaza Park in Brooklyn, New York City. It was an extraordinary gathering that brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds, spanning all walks of life. Amidst the multitude, dignitaries including the mayor, borough president, and other city-state officials stood united. Yet, the true essence of this moment resided in the presence of George Floyd's grieving family and the unwavering support they received from individuals who had traveled from every corner of the city. Remarkably, even in the midst of a pandemic, the crowd extended as far as my eyes could behold.

As I stood atop a park bench, observing the scene with awe, I recognized the embodiment of solidarity that encapsulated this nascent movement sweeping across our nation. Fists clenched in unwavering determination punctuated the landscape, but what struck me was the uniqueness of this particular moment. The uplifted hands belonged to a black woman, a white man, an Asian man, and a Hispanic woman, all fused together in a harmonious display of unity. In the background, an arm adorned with a rainbow bracelet caught my attention, further exemplifying the depth of inclusivity. The people shared a single purpose, aligning their minds, hearts, and spirits in pursuit of genuine justice.

This awakening reverberated across America, leaving no room for complacency. The hunger for change had consumed the nation, transcending ethnicity and inspiring each individual to contribute their part towards the noble cause of equality.

I feel immense humility for having captured this profoundly powerful image through my lens. It is my sincere belief that it will serve as a catalyst, motivating you to stand shoulder to shoulder in unity, resolute in the fight for a better future.

Note: A portion of the proceeds will go to the fight for equality and justice.
