Phototherapy Wednesday: Eyjafjallajökull A Volcanic Hike
In 2015 I had the wonderful opportunity to climb the amazing Eyjafjallajökull. It is one of the smaller ice caps of Iceland that covers the caldera of the Icelandic volcano. After climbing almost a 6,000 feet in elevation, I stood in awe of the spectacular views. However, I must say it was one of the most challenging hikes of my life. There were steep sections to climb and distant walks across ice sheets. I was surprised by the fluctuations of the temperatures, and the periods of being pelted by ice and then the rain. In between all the weather changes, there were moments of beautiful sun and blue skies.
Adding to the challenge of my climb of this volcanic hike, I had overpacked my backpack with to much camera gear, food, and water. Lucky for me I was with a caring team of hikers. They saw me struggling and offered to carry some of the contents. I was grateful for their kind gesture.
This long volcanic hike took teamwork and an incredible commitment by all of us to get to the top. But when we ascended to the peak, we were all greeted with breathtaking scenic views. We were able to photograph one of the world’s most intriguing landscapes.
Phototherapy lesson learned: We cannot do life alone. It is imperative to ask for help when challenges occur. Also, we must surround ourselves with team members that are gracious, smart, and intuitive to the success of the group.
